Ambergris Sunset Hotel Overview

First Impressions

The Ambergris Sunset Hotel sits right on Nurse Shark Street in San Pedro, and honestly, the name tells you everything you need to know about this place. This three-star property doesn’t try to be something it’s not — it’s a solid, comfortable base for exploring Ambergris Caye without the pretense of fancier resorts. What struck me immediately was how the staff actually responds to questions quickly, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is in Belize.

Location & Getting Around

You know what makes this spot work? It’s genuinely well-positioned in San Pedro without being right in the chaos of the main strip. Couples seem to get this — they’ve rated the location 9.6, and I can see why. You’re close enough to walk to restaurants and bars, but far enough that you’re not dealing with constant noise. The free parking is actually a big deal here since many places in San Pedro charge for it or don’t have it at all. Trust me, if you’re renting a golf cart (which you should), having a guaranteed spot matters.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was clean and functional — think comfortable bed, decent air conditioning, and a bathroom that actually has good water pressure. It’s not going to win any design awards, but everything works as it should. The sunset views from certain rooms are genuinely nice, though I’d recommend asking specifically for one when you book. The Wi-Fi was reliable enough for basic needs, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed on the island.

What Sets It Apart

Here’s the thing about Ambergris Sunset Hotel — it gets the fundamentals right without any fuss. The property has this laid-back vibe that matches San Pedro perfectly. You’re not dealing with overcrowded pools or pushy timeshare presentations. Instead, you get straightforward hospitality from people who actually seem to care about your stay. The recent guest rating of 9.4 for location isn’t just numbers — it reflects how this place sits in that sweet spot where you feel like you’re experiencing real Belize, not some sanitized resort version.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back is the combination of reliability and authenticity. You’ll spend most of your time exploring the reef, wandering San Pedro’s streets, or taking day trips anyway — so having a comfortable, well-located place to return to each evening is exactly what you need. The staff’s responsiveness means you can actually get help planning activities or solving problems without waiting around. For couples especially, there’s something appealing about a place that doesn’t overwhelm you with amenities you won’t use, but delivers on the basics that matter for a memorable Belize getaway.

Everything was excellent but think rustic rather than luxurious. Family room on ground floor was spacious and had two large double beds as well as a bunk bed where we could stow our things. AC worked well and room also had two ceiling fans. Small fridge was great to keep drinks cool and coffee maker was very welcome. Early check-in was no problem and meant we could head straight to hotel from the water taxi. There is off road parking for a couple of golf carts but we just parked in the street in front. The small 4 ft deep swimming pool was clean and really appreciated by son. We were the only ones at poolside so size of pool was not a problem. There are plenty of loungers beside the pool too. Shower in bathroom was adequate as was water supply. I only found a single electrical outlet in the room. It has an adaptor allowing up to six devices to be connected but this is used by the fridge, TV and cable box so gets a little cramped. There’s a small table with a couple of chairs for laptop by the outlet.

Miguel is a friendly guy and gave us a free coconut to drink. Unfortunately he had lost several customers due to the menace of Hurricane Beryl, which never arrived. We had postponed our trip too. There’s a restaurant but we didn’t use it so can’t comment on the food. There are a couple of hammocks and swing chairs but surprisingly no beer.

Location is excellent. The hotel is on the opposite (west) side of the island from where the water taxi arrives from Belize City but only a 10-minute walk if you’re not too loaded up with bags. It’s on the same side as the departure terminal for water taxi to Corozal (5 minute walk). It’s in the centre of town and there’s a supermarket with ATM a 2-minute walk away. Check out is 11 a.m. but we were able to leave our bags in the office as our boat off the island wasn’t until 3 p.m.
