Ambergris Sunset Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Ambergris Sunset Hotel on Nurse Shark Street, you immediately get that authentic Belizean vibe — it’s not trying to be something it’s not, which I honestly appreciate. This three-star property sits right in the heart of San Pedro, and you can tell from the moment you arrive that the owners actually care about their guests. The staff responds incredibly quickly to any questions (something that’s rare these days), and there’s just this welcoming energy that makes you feel like you’re staying with friends rather than checking into another generic hotel.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s the thing about the location — couples absolutely love it here, rating it 9.5 out of 10, and I can see why. You’re literally steps away from everything that makes San Pedro special, but you’re not stuck in the middle of tourist chaos. The parking situation is actually fantastic since they offer free private spots, which honestly saves you a headache in this area. I mean, you can walk to the main strip for dinner and drinks, but when you want to retreat, you’ve got this peaceful spot to come back to. The recent guest rating of 9.4 for location isn’t just numbers — it’s because you really can experience the best of both worlds here.
The Room Experience
The room itself feels comfortable and well-designed, which fits perfectly with the island atmosphere. You know what I really appreciated? The attention to practical details — good air conditioning (crucial in Belize), clean bathrooms, and windows that actually let you enjoy the Caribbean breeze when you want it. Everything works well and feels thoughtfully maintained. The beds are comfortable enough that you’ll actually sleep well after a day of diving or exploring the island.
Breakfast & Dining
Breakfast here covers all the bases — they do Continental, American, and even breakfast to go if you’re heading out early for a diving trip or island excursion. The breakfast-to-go option is actually pretty smart since so many activities in San Pedro start early morning. I found the American breakfast satisfying and well-prepared, nothing groundbreaking but definitely what you need to fuel up for the day. The continental option works well too if you prefer something lighter before heading out to explore.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is the genuine hospitality and that perfect balance of being close to everything while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. The quick response time to guest questions isn’t just good service — it shows they’re actually paying attention and want to make sure your stay goes smoothly. Couples especially seem to connect with the vibe here, probably because it feels intimate without being isolated. You’re getting solid value for a three-star property, with the kind of personal touches that make you want to come back to Ambergris Caye and stay here again.

Everything was excellent but think rustic rather than luxurious. Family room on ground floor was spacious and had two large double beds as well as a bunk bed where we could stow our things. AC worked well and room also had two ceiling fans. Small fridge was great to keep drinks cool and coffee maker was very welcome. Early check-in was no problem and meant we could head straight to hotel from the water taxi. There is off road parking for a couple of golf carts but we just parked in the street in front. The small 4 ft deep swimming pool was clean and really appreciated by son. We were the only ones at poolside so size of pool was not a problem. There are plenty of loungers beside the pool too. Shower in bathroom was adequate as was water supply. I only found a single electrical outlet in the room. It has an adaptor allowing up to six devices to be connected but this is used by the fridge, TV and cable box so gets a little cramped. There’s a small table with a couple of chairs for laptop by the outlet.
Miguel is a friendly guy and gave us a free coconut to drink. Unfortunately he had lost several customers due to the menace of Hurricane Beryl, which never arrived. We had postponed our trip too. There’s a restaurant but we didn’t use it so can’t comment on the food. There are a couple of hammocks and swing chairs but surprisingly no beer.
Location is excellent. The hotel is on the opposite (west) side of the island from where the water taxi arrives from Belize City but only a 10-minute walk if you’re not too loaded up with bags. It’s on the same side as the departure terminal for water taxi to Corozal (5 minute walk). It’s in the centre of town and there’s a supermarket with ATM a 2-minute walk away. Check out is 11 a.m. but we were able to leave our bags in the office as our boat off the island wasn’t until 3 p.m.Col1427 from United Kingdom (8/10)
